Design HQ was established in 1989 and incorporated federally in 1998. We provide smart design and communications to businesses involved in product development, distribution and sales; public and private services; environmental initiatives and entertainment. Our markets include B2B and B2C.

We work with clients on 6 of the 7 continents (haven't nurtured relationships in Antartica yet!).

Our clients range from musicians and artisans to one of the world’s largest health product manufacturers. They include sawmill technology developers that virtually eliminate mill waste; mining/environmental engineers with global operations; and neighbourhoods that buck the North American trend towards franchised, big box warehouses.

Each of our clients have unique objectives and we pride ourselves in achieving them through equally unique solutions. We avoid cookie-cutter deliverables for multiple clients within the same industry. Our diverse client mix frequently provides some very unique hybrid solutions.

Our design efforts for TELUS — chosen Canada’s most environmentally friendly company for 2003 — garnered a Mobius Award, first in category for design excellence.

Our news release for Hemptown (now HTnaturals) was ranked in the top ten accessed files at CNW’s award winning website, www.newswire.ca — a site that receives over 2 million hits daily.

Identities & Branding
We have provided corporate and product identities as well as comprehensive brand strategies that frequently look as crisp and timeless after years (sometimes decades!) of service as they did when they were launched. The companies, programs and products we brand have travelled to the depths of the world’s oceans and back; been sent into orbit; crossed continents and, most importantly, found a memorable space in the minds of their audiences.

Take a look at 50 of our identities (740 KB PDF).

Communications Design
One of our key strengths is distilling potentially complex, technical information into an enticing, comprehensible message. We frequently move messages out of niche channels into mainstream communications for broader audiences. Whether it’s a retail package or an industrial catalogue; a non-profit organization or an industry association, successful communications design is a blend of image and content; a balance of emotion and reason. It makes the message an inviting read.

Web Development
The sites we’ve developed for our clients are easy to navigate, visually engaging and technically sound. We check them on different operating systems, in multiple browsers — old versions & new.

We often provide complete content development — photography, animation, research and copywriting — in addition to the site design and production.

They range from static HTML sites to dynamic sites with functionality that includes e-commerce, multi-currency and multi-language all controlled with a GUI content management system or CMS.

EcoLogo100% of the electricity used in the office of Design HQ is certified by the EcoLogo Program as green electricity from new green projects (operational post 2001). This new green electricity generation results in the avoidance of greenhouse gas and other air emissions.

highway transport truckReduced Transport: As often as possible, print design for our national and international clients is distributed electronically then printed and distributed regionally, reducing material transportation costs and related fuel consumption and emissions. Examples include SRK Consulting whose South Africa, Australia, Brazil and UK offices download files from our FTP site for printing and distribution regionally.

So, does that really make a difference? Look at this example: Trucking 4,000 brochures from Vancouver to Toronto emits 1.85 tons of hydrocarbons, 5.58 tons of CO2 and 29.86 tons of NOx. Emissions from air freight are over 13 times higher. By comparison, downloading a print file emits 0.17 lb of CO2 equivalent. That's a pretty big spread.

Even regional projects such as the downloadable print resources for Homelessness Awareness Week eliminate the need to transport goods. In fact, our local courier trips in 2007 were 47% of what they were in 2004 — and that number continues to decline. Good news considering that, on average, each local delivery produces more than 2 kg (5 lb) of carbon dioxide (CO2) along with other smog-forming pollutants that degrade air quality.

iMac computerEnergy Efficiency: We use Macs. Independent studies consistently show that Macs have significantly lower power consumption than PCs so also generate less heat. Combine that with flat screen LCDs and a cross-ventilated office and we get along comfortably without AC. OK — we may need the occasional popsicle break or a late afternoon ice-cold beer in mid-August, but we have an Energy Star fridge!

Waste Not: We develop innovative ways to keep materials out of the solid waste stream and repurpose them as environmentally beneficial products such as the reusable nylon shopping bags we've developed from Commercial Drive's old street banners. Read about our environmental impact reduction for this project.

calculator wheelsBenefit Calculators: Our environmental benefit calculators have quantified the cumulative impact of purchasing decisions for many of our clients' customers. These are very pursuasive marketing tools because they use tangible examples and provide hard numbers substantiated by data from reliable 3rd party sources.

Non-toxic: Design HQ's building and grounds have been pesticide-free since 1991 and we plan on keeping it that way. Our cleaners use environmentally preferable products such as Seventh Generation or Ecover or a homemade cleaner made with water, lemon juice, vineger and baking soda.

Still Improving: We have to admit, we still have a few incandescent light bulbs burning and we haven't entirely kicked our paper cup habit at coffee time, but we're working on it!
